Halloween Safety
Trick-orTreaters
Carry a flashlight
Walk, don't run
Stay on sidewalks
Obey traffic signals
Stay in familiar neighborhoods
Don't cut across yards or driveways
Wear a watch you can read in the dark

If there isn't a side walk on the street walk on the left side of the road facing traffic and wear clothing with reflective markings
Always look both ways when crossing a street
Costume Safety
Make sure your costume does not drag on the ground as this could interfere with your walking and you could trip and fall
Carry only flexible knives, swords or other props
Your shoes should fit properly and be comfortable for walking long distances
Avoid wearing masks while walking from house to house
-
Make sure your costume can accommodate layers of clothing underneath if it is cold outside
Use reflective tape on your costume so motorists can see you in the dark
Tips for Parents
Make sure your child eats dinner before setting out
Give your children some quarters or a cell phone so they can call home
-
Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult.
If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch and give them a time to be home and where they can reach you
Only buy costumes made of flame-retardant material
You should always know where your children are going
Although tampering is rare, it can happen, tell children to bring candy home for inspection before consuming anything. Look at the wrappings carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect or anything opened.
When checking candy ensure none of the wrappers are opened or tampered with. Avoid drinking any pop out of the can, instead pour it into a cup. Fruits and homemade treats should be avoided unless they are given to you by people you know.
